This short film was commissioned in collaboration with 'Hair Makeup & Prosthetics for Performance Student Hannah Mundin's Final Year Degree showcase project, studying at University of the Arts London.  The task was to produce a short 2 minute film highlighting two types of prosthetic masks; using different lighting and camera techniques we showcased the prosthetic's bringing them to life to tell their story. The film aims to highlight Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSS) originally known as 'Shell Shock'. Set in the aftermath of WW1 we take an intimate glimpse into the unobserved 'self' of  Corporal T. Rigs. We are delighted to announce that Hannah Mundin received a First for her Degree, the decision was heavy influenced by her incredible prosthetics which are showcased in this short film. This short film had a 7 day filming & editing schedule.  As we were working with an external actor and limited completed prosthetic mask resources, we only had a 2 day window to complete all the filming before a 5 day editing timetable to meet the University of the Arts London deadline. Prior to filming, Performance Student Hannah Mundin, conducted a 4 month Research & Development process in order to create a loose storyboard (which TimeSlide Studios adapted for  film) along with creating & tailoring 2 different prosthetic marks for the actor. Timeslide Studios was then commissioned by Performance Student, Hannah Mundin, to set the scenes, choreograph the actor and 'set' before filming the sequences. As the actor's make-up and prosthetic masks each took 6hrs to apply by Hannah Mundin, Timeslide Studios decided to film each prosthetic mask on separate days, which added an extra level of continuity challenges which were overcome during the editing process. Filming Challenge: The Mirror Sequence: 1 actor, 2 prosthetic masks, 2 reflections 'before and now' simultaneously. Continuity: 2 days of filming, 'set' in a residential bathroom. Set had to be collapsed after Day 1 (as bathroom still in use!). Day 2 - the 'set' had to be recreated exactly, including the artificial lighting and full-size blackout backdrop curtain, to enable scene continuity and reduce the effect of the natural light at different points of the day. Day 1: Filmed actor with 'healed scaring' prosthetic mask, looking in the mirror, with natural dusk lighting behind camera. We had to anticipate what lighting and camera angles we would need to enable us to reproduce the same camera angles for Day 2. We measured camera height, tripod length, camera location in relationship of distance from the actor, so that we could exactly replicate the position next day, to ensure continuity. Day 2: Filmed actor with 'fresh wounds' prosthetic mask, as we were now filming in the morning, due to the tight schedule, we had too much natural light flooding the bathroom. We blocked as much natural light from entering the room and experimented with lighting angles to off-set and match the remaining natural light. A particular challenge we had with the second mask (fresh wounds prosthetic) was that it was quite dark with many ridges, meaning that if it wasn't lighted correctly it could be over exposed on 1 side and invisible on the other... OR the light would bounce off the mirror causing the mask to be un evenly lighted and all the masks ridges creating deep shadows. To counter act this we had to use more artificial lighting with we painstakingly rigged up around the very small bathroom to produce even light throughout whilst avoiding the giant mirror (which had a habit of reflecting the light rigging). Faroe Islanders have a tradition called 'The Grind' where they slaughter Whales + Dolphins in their thousands for fun. In 2019 the UK Government finalised a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Faroes Islands allowing them to export £864 million of wild caught + farmed fish to Britain per annum (20% of the Faroes Islands trade). Blue Seas Protection created a petition, with the help + guidance of wildlife campaigner, Dominic Dyer, calling for the UK Government to 'Suspend trade agreement with the Faroe Islands until all Whale and Dolphin hunts end'; this petition received 104,664 signatures from 120 countries around the world AND every UK Constituency. The UK Government suddenly announced on 29JUN22 that on 11JUL22, they would discuss the petition in Westminster Hall! Despite only 13 days notice, Blue Seas Protection + Lobby the Lobster decided to rally the sea-troops! Lobby's 1st mission was to hand deliver a personal letter from the Sea to Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely at the Conservative's Constituency Office at Northwood House. No response was received, so Lobby left Isle of Wight on Mon 04JUL22, via WightLink Ferry to Portsmouth, coach from Portsmouth to Victoria Station with the intention to visit Parliament + Lobby MP Bob Sealy in Parliament’s Central Lobby! On the Victoria Tube Lobby was Lost, a kindly gentleman asked 'Did you draw the short straw!?' 'Yes' Lobby nodded, looking down at the bright red costume 'I'm lost, I've never been to London before and need to get to Parliament urgently' 'Oh, I don't know many places BUT I do know where Parliament is!' the gent replied 'Are YOU an MP?!' asked Lobby 'No, I'm a Lord!' 'Congratulations! I'm a Crustacean! And I'm here to Lobby London to STOP THE GRIND!' replied Lobby Lobster 'THE GRIND! What is that? I know nothing of this' as the Lord Finklestein took Lobby's letter from him and read intently before pointed out that Westminster Station was next + that was Lobby's stop for Parliament. 'Good Luck!' called the Lord, as Lobby disembarked from the tube train. After a sit-down protest at Westminster Tube Station, Lobby climbed the steps out of the hole in the ground, into the bright daylight of Westminster, confronted by the magnificent Elizabeth Tower with Big Ben at the top. Crowds laughed + waved to see a Lobby Lobster in the centre of London. Undeterred, Lobby crossed the road to Parliament + met a man with plastic bottles placards and they joined together for a photo-shoot for passers-by. Lobby went to enter Parliament but kindly Bobbies, after their initial shock of how to handle a 6ft Red Lobster intent on Lobbying in Central Lobby, stated that, unfortunately, Lobby the Lobster was not allowed into the famous Central Lobby, as it was considered, at the front security gate, that Lobby was a Crustacean NOT a Constituent! Never mind...2 Blue Seas Protection Colleagues had to go in Lobby's place to lobby Bob Seely MP instead. But Bob Seely MP refused to meet Blue Seas Protection in Central Lobby + to this day, Bob Sealy MP has still not made contact at all to discuss the #StopTheGrind, despite it being his duty. Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely did not attend, despite Lobby's letter, emails + trip to London to Lobby in Central Lobby. BUT 5 Amazing MP's did attend: John Nicholson SNP, Patricia Gibson SNP, Ruth Cadbury Labour, Kerry McCarthy Labour, all spoke with passion, + in-depth knowledge of #TheGrind which heartened Lobby Lobster, who was worried that no one would turn up for the debate, as PM Boris Johnson had resigned just 4 days earlier. Unsurprisingly, Andrew Griffith Conservative MP and newly appointed UK Minister for Exports stated that the Government would not suspend trade with the Faroes. In response to the debate, the Faroes Islands released a statement just 2 days before the debate was due to take place, stating that they would cap the amount of Dolphins killed per Grind to a maximum of 500 Dolphins Per Grind–Whales are unlimited. Given that even 1 dolphin killed is too many, this shocking ‘500 per kill’ cap is essentially an ‘increase’. Faroe Islanders used to kill only Whales…but now they have an £864million UK Fish Deal, they have to catch the fish in order to service the deal… A Grind is started whenever the Faroe Islanders spot a pod of Dolphins/Whales...it is not date or year related, so the cap of 500 dolphins per kill, is now legally increasing the amount of Whales/Dolphins killed in one go, to more than they usually kill in a year.Join Us #StopTheGrind by opting for a #FishFreeFriday to send a UK Consumer Pound message to the UK + Faroes Government: Not 1 Drop of Dolphin or Whale Blood will Taint our UK Tradition of Fish’n’chips. Please Note: that the above footage has been edited together in the same order that it was taken, so that viewers can view the dive site as it was originally surveyed, this footage was taken on GoPro 1 and focused further out in the deeper survey area past Stag Rock... SEE the next video in the playlist for GoPro 2 footage which focuses on the Chalk Shelf. Also please note that the date stamp is incorrect. This was DiVE LiVE!'s 1st Seasearch Training Dive of the day, at Freshwater's Stag Rock (at the far left hand side of the bay). The Dive Team need to complete 2x Seasearch Trainer assisted dives along with 4x Surveys (conducted as a team separate from the Seasearch Trainer Days) in order to become fully qualified Seasearch Observers. During this first dive, the Dive Team practiced surveying the dive Site filming all the marine organisms they encountered, they also sketching the Survey area in order to capture a rough terrain guide of the area in order to plot spices distribution (from captured footage) and also to help aid memory for when the Dive Team dive this location again... if anything had significantly changed it would show from the notes. Overview of Dive Survey: The Dive Team assembled under the early morning shadow that stretched out beneath the Sandy Chalk Cliffs, the pebbly beach shelft away from the cliffs and continued to fall away sharply once it dipped into the sea down to about 1.5m. Approx. 5 meters off shore the seabed rises vertically to form a vast solid rocky shelf that just sits about 1/2m below the high water. At low tide the Dive Team can see the full extent of this 'rocky reef' and that the shelf encircles the headland and Stag Rock before stretching (with rocky finger like ridges) out into Freshwater Bay. Within the ridged shelfs there was a myriad of short seaweeds and marine organisms that were nestled deep within the undulating chalk shelfs, these ridges at Low Tide (when the shelf is completely exposed) would still be full of seawater creatine hundreds of small + large rockpools that cover the shelf. On top of the shelfs (out of reach of the rockpools) tough spiky seaweeds cling to the chalk which is also encrusted in barnacles and limpets... even a few Beadlet and Strawberry Anemones still stick within the pebble dashed chalk surface. Further out past Stag Rock the almost constant Chalk Shelfs melds away and the seafloor steadily drops to approx. 2.5m. Taller seaweed species grow here but are still accompanied by the original flora and fauna that inhabited the Chalk Shelf; in this area boulders litter the seafloor along with giant rectangular shaped slabs of rock that lie in a linier formation along the seabed, between these slabs kelp grows and other taller seaweeds which form a leafy highway for large Wrasse to swim through.
